Rudolf van Lier
1914 – 1987
Sociologist and author of the standard work Frontier Society (1949)
Rudolf van Lier wrote the first systematic sociological analysis of Suriname's colonial society.
Born in Paramaribo in 1914, Van Lier received his doctorate in Leiden in 1949 with Samenleving in een grensgebied (English translation Frontier Society, 1971). He introduced the concept of 'plural society' to describe the Surinamese demographic reality and became a professor at Wageningen University.
