Teacher, governor and eventually first president of independent Suriname.
Johan Ferrier was born in Paramaribo in 1910. He began his career as a teacher, became minister of Education (1955) and governor of Suriname (1968–1975). At independence on 25 November 1975 he became the first president — a ceremonial post alongside executive prime minister Arron.
After the 1980 coup he was deposed and moved to the Netherlands. He reached the age of 100 and died in 2010 in Oegstgeest.
