Baron
ca. 1730 – ca. 1789
Former town slave who became strategist of the Boni Maroons
Born into slavery in Paramaribo, Baron learned to read and write, escaped into the rainforest and became a leading strategist alongside Boni.
Baron grew up in a wealthy household in Paramaribo. His master had promised him freedom but never recorded it legally. When the master died and Baron was sold on, he fled to the interior.
He joined Boni and brought to the Maroon community his knowledge of the Dutch language, military tactics and engineering. He designed the fortified palisades of the village of Boekoe.
Baron died around 1789, probably in French Guiana. His life shows that resistance was not only born in the rainforest, but also among urban, literate enslaved people.
