Resistance & Maroons
Tata Colin
ca. 1808 – ca. 1865
Spiritual leader and organiser of the Coronie revolt (1836)
Tata Colin was a spiritual leader, herbalist and organiser of an uprising on the Coronie plantations in 1836.
Colin was born either on a West-African plantation or in Coronie itself — sources differ. He gained great authority among the enslaved through his knowledge of Winti, herbal medicine and his organisational gifts.
In 1836 he led an uprising during which plantation owners were killed and warehouses looted. The revolt was crushed; Colin was banished to fort Nieuw-Amsterdam where he remained imprisoned for years.
In Coronie he is still regarded as a resistance hero; in 2003 Cynthia McLeod published the historical novel 'Tutuba'.
