Sophie Redmond
1907 – 1955
Second female doctor of Suriname and pioneer of public health
From the 1930s onwards Sophie Redmond worked tirelessly for health care, women's rights and the Sranantongo language.
Born in 1907 in Paramaribo, Redmond was Suriname's second female doctor (after Cleantha de Hart). She treated poor patients free of charge at her practice in the Sophie Redmondstraat (named after her posthumously).
She wrote plays and health-education materials in Sranantongo and campaigned for recognition of the language as a legitimate cultural medium. She died young at 47 in 1955.
