Henck Arron led Suriname to independence on 25 November 1975 and served as prime minister of the young republic until 1980.
Arron was born in Paramaribo in 1936 and worked in the Netherlands as a bank clerk before returning in 1961. As leader of the National Party of Suriname (NPS) he won the 1973 elections with the promise of independence within four years.
On 25 November 1975 the Dutch queen Juliana transferred sovereignty to Suriname. Arron thereby became the first prime minister of a new nation. In 1980 he was deposed by the Bouterse military coup. He narrowly escaped the December Murders of 1982. He died in 2000.
