History

Paradise was een typische **Nickerie-katoenplantage**. Nickerie ligt in West-Suriname, vlakbij de grens met (Brits-)Guyana. De regio kwam pas in de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw goed tot ontwikkeling, met grote katoen- en suikerplantages, deels in Engelse en Schotse handen, en een sterke instroom van na-1873 contractarbeiders uit India en Java.

De Engelstalige naam (zoals ook Sarah, Leasowes, Nursery in dezelfde regio) verraadt de sterke Engelse en Schotse betrokkenheid bij de Nickerie-plantage-economie. Veel van deze plantages werden in de 19e eeuw gefinancierd en gerund vanuit Demerara (Brits-Guyana). Met **375 geregistreerden** behoorde Paradise tot de grotere ondernemingen in West-Suriname.

Op 1 juli 1863 schafte Nederland de slavernij in Suriname formeel af. De op deze plantage werkende mensen werden in het Emancipatieregister opgenomen en kregen \u2014 vaak verbonden aan de plantagenaam \u2014 een familienaam. Daarna gold nog een tienjarig Staatstoezicht (tot 1873), waarbij voormalig tot slaaf gemaakten verplicht waren tegen loon op of nabij de plantage te blijven werken.

Na 1873 kwamen in Nickerie grote aantallen contractarbeiders uit Brits-Indië werken, waarmee de bevolkingssamenstelling van de regio sterk veranderde.
