History
Nursery was een typische Engels-georiënteerde Nickerie-plantage. Nickerie ligt in West-Suriname, vlakbij de grens met (Brits-)Guyana. De regio kwam pas in de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw goed tot ontwikkeling, met grote katoen- en suikerplantages, deels in Engelse en Schotse handen, en een sterke instroom van na-1873 contractarbeiders uit India en Java.
Met **347 geregistreerden** in 1863 behoorde Nursery tot de grootste ondernemingen van het Nickeriedistrict. De naam ('kwekerij') verwijst vermoedelijk naar een aanvankelijke functie als plant- of zaadkwekerij. Op 1 juli 1863 schafte Nederland de slavernij in Suriname formeel af. De op deze plantage werkende mensen werden in het Emancipatieregister opgenomen en kregen \u2014 vaak verbonden aan de plantagenaam \u2014 een familienaam. Daarna gold nog een tienjarig Staatstoezicht (tot 1873), waarbij voormalig tot slaaf gemaakten verplicht waren tegen loon op of nabij de plantage te blijven werken.
