Obia (Obeah) is a term used in the West Indies to refer to folk magic, sorcery, and religious practices derived from West Africa- believed to have originated from the Ashanti and Koromantin tribes. In Suriname specifically, there are people with origins from Ghana, Ivory Coast, Angola, Windward coast, Sierra Leone and more which have had a cultural influence in Suriname.

From shots taken themselves in Suriname’s beautifully conserved Amazon, to shots within the goldmines of Suriname’s interior, ‘I Choose Me’ brings you through the emotional journey of these adolescents, their fears, hopes, dreams, thoughts and choices, to better their own lives within their possibilities.
