History

Sarah was opnieuw een **Engels-georiënteerde Nickerie-plantage**, vernoemd \u2014 zoals zo vaak in deze regio \u2014 naar een vrouwelijk lid van de eigenaarsfamilie. Nickerie ligt in West-Suriname, vlakbij de grens met (Brits-)Guyana. De regio kwam pas in de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw goed tot ontwikkeling, met grote katoen- en suikerplantages, deels in Engelse en Schotse handen, en een sterke instroom van na-1873 contractarbeiders uit India en Java.

Met **320 geregistreerden** in 1863 was Sarah één van de grotere ondernemingen van het westen van de kolonie. Op 1 juli 1863 schafte Nederland de slavernij in Suriname formeel af. De op deze plantage werkende mensen werden in het Emancipatieregister opgenomen en kregen \u2014 vaak verbonden aan de plantagenaam \u2014 een familienaam. Daarna gold nog een tienjarig Staatstoezicht (tot 1873), waarbij voormalig tot slaaf gemaakten verplicht waren tegen loon op of nabij de plantage te blijven werken.
