PONTHIEU was a Surinamese plantation in the Matappica region.
In 1863, the year of emancipation, 95 enslaved people were registered at PONTHIEU. This made it the #118 largest plantation in Suriname (top 77%). Their descendants — who in 1863 received a family name for the first time — are spread across the Caribbean and the global diaspora today.
