Johannes King

1830 – 1898

Maroon prophet and first Saramaka to record his dreams in writing

Johannes King was a Saramaka Maroon who taught himself to read and write and as a prophet and chronicler left behind a unique diary.

Born around 1830 as a Maroon along the Upper Suriname river, King taught himself to write through Moravian missionaries. He recorded his visions and the daily life of his community in Saramaccan and Sranantongo. His manuscripts form one of the oldest interior sources on Surinamese Maroon life.
