The First Inhabitants
Long before European colonists arrived, Suriname was inhabited for at least 10,000 years by indigenous peoples who developed complex societies in harmony with the tropical rainforest.
The Indigenous Peoples
Suriname recognizes four indigenous peoples across two language families: the Kali'na and Trio/Wayana (Carib family) and the Lokono (Arawak family). Each has unique traditions, from Kali'na basket weaving to Wayana initiation rituals.
Traditional Knowledge
Indigenous peoples possess invaluable knowledge of medicinal plants, sustainable agriculture, and cassava culture that has been passed down for millennia.
Challenges and Protection
These communities face threats from illegal gold mining, unrecognized land rights, and climate change. However, indigenous youth are combining traditional knowledge with modern education to chart a hopeful path forward.
